Implementation

Set up cross-compiler build environment.

Requirements:

Install cross-compiler (i686-elf-gcc)
Write linker script (linker.ld)
Create Makefile for building kernel
Write minimal C kernel code
Compile and link kernel binary
Test with QEMU emulator
Show kernel output (Hello, kernel!)

Test: Simulate the build pipeline as a C program that prints each stage:

"cross-compiler ready" once the toolchain check passes
"target: i686-elf" for the configured target triple
"linker: kernel at 1M" after applying the linker script
"qemu: Hello, kernel world!" for the emulated boot output

Why This Matters

Every real OS project starts with a cross-toolchain: the Linux kernel builds with dedicated cross-compilers for each of its 20+ architectures, and hobby kernels following the OSDev Bare Bones path all begin with i686-elf-gcc. The freestanding flags and linker-script discipline you set up here are the same machinery behind embedded firmware, U-Boot, and Rust's no_std targets.
