Write barriers are the tax every generational and concurrent GC charges on pointer stores — V8, HotSpot, and Go's collector compile them into your code invisibly. Go's escape from stop-the-world pauses to sub-millisecond concurrent collection was possible only because of the barrier design you are implementing.
