Implementation

Write a C program that documents each network layer with printf statements. Show what happens at each layer for a ping packet.

Requirements:

Print a header showing the packet type (ping/ICMP)
Document the application layer action
Document the socket layer action
Document the transport layer (note ICMP bypasses TCP/UDP)
Document the network layer (IP header, TTL, protocol)
Document the link layer (Ethernet frame, MAC addresses)
Document the physical layer (wire transmission)
Include relevant protocol names: ICMP, IP, Ethernet
Use clear printf messages for each stage

Why This Matters

Wireshark's packet detail pane and tcpdump's verbose output are literally this encapsulation model rendered as text, one pane per layer you trace here. Misreading which layer a field belongs to is a common source of firewall misconfiguration and a classic interview stumbling block for network engineering roles.
