The System V AMD64 calling convention — rdi, rsi, rdx for arguments, rax for return — is the ABI of Linux and macOS; every FFI (Python ctypes, Rust extern C, JNI) and every stack trace depends on it. Debugging a segfault in gdb without source is impossible unless you can read arguments out of these registers.
